    • At the August 22nd, 2012 meeting of the Folsom Shooting Club's Board of Directors, the petition was presented, to re-name Cowboy Town, "Diamond Dick's Cowboy Town". The Board of Directors voted unanimously to grant the request. It was my privilege to communicate the news to Diamond Dick. Spirit of the Game Penalty Clarification

Snakebite posted the following on the SASS Wire (via Allie Mo):

You are supposed to do your best to shoot the stage the way it is written. If you screw up and do it wrong, you get a "P". If that happens, it does not release you from the obligation to continue the best you can with the scenario. If you CHOOSE to continue the stage in the fastest way possible, just to make up time, then you are NOT doing the right thing. You can claim that your interpretation of the rules is such that once you make a mistake you are no longer obliged to follow the scenario, but that does not make it right. It is a "Spirit of the Game" penalty to do so.

That is an OFFICIAL ruling from the ROC.

I would not issue a SOG to a shooter who did such because they were confused. I would issue a SOG to a shooter who did such to save time. How would I know? I would ask the shooter. Yes, the shooter could lie about it and get away with it.

Integrity is a personal thing. Some have it, and some don't.

    New Pocket Pistol Rules for
River City Regulators and Two Rivers Posse

Effective immediately, RCR and TRP will enforce the use of only SASS legal pocket pistols in all club matches. However, not owning a correct pocket pistol will not preclude your shooting in our matches. The use of derringers will no longer be allowed. Any shooter who does not have a SASS legal pocket pistol will be required to engage a designated regular pistol target in the same manner in stages which require the use of a pocket pistol. This includes any sheriff's model revolver, Bearcats, Single Sixes or any and all .22 caliber pocket pistol revolvers. You may continue to use these pistols until you acquire a SASS legal model.

    From the SASS handbook:

A pocket pistol is a small frame, fixed sight, pre-1900 design revolver having a barrel length of four inches or less. Pocket pistols must be .31 caliber or larger. Model “P” Colts and clones and revolvers with swing out cylinders are specifically not allowed regardless of caliber, frame size, or barrel length. Pocket pistols may not be used as or converted to main match revolvers.

In our stages, our pocket pistol shooting strings will be four rounds.

Thanks and hope to see y'all at our matches!

Two Rivers Posse Range Is Flooded; Ambush at Durham Ferry Is Cancelled!

    To All Local Cowboy Shooters,

We are looking at all of two and probably three months before the range will be in shooting condition again. The water level was down a bit today, but we'd still need flat boats to shoot. If you had registered for Ambush, your check went back into the mail for you today. We are not planning for a conventional annual shoot for 2011. When the water recedes, we are planning for a two day "Just Shootin'" event along with a Cowboy swap meet hopefully by the end of August. Don't allow your guns to get cobwebs. Go to our colleague SASS clubs and have some fun. Not so much fun that you forget to come back, though.

    Pictures!

    Thank you,

    Shenandoah

Overloading the Rifle - No Penalty!

For the past several years, the rule dealing with overloading the rifle has been a hot topic. Lengthy discussions regarding this issue have taken place at the TG Summit and at most major TG gatherings. In each case, the overwhelming desire of the TGs and the membership at large has been to remove this unfair rule from the SASS Rule Book. Overloading a rifle on a stage is not a safety issue. The safety issue comes into play if the shooter has any rounds left in the rifle after he/she has fired the rifle and committed to the next gun. Changing SASS rules can ONLY be done by the TGs or the Wild Bunch. After numerous unsuccessful attempts to get this issue resolved, the Wild Bunch has decided to MANDATE the change. They do this with the complete backing of the SASS RO committee and, I'm sure, with the majority support of all SASS members. Should the shooter realize that he/she has loaded too many rounds and safely ejects those rounds, it’s a no call.

Expect an announcement to this effect in the next Cowboy Chronicle abolishing this rule. It will be in effect at this year's EOT

    Additional clarification and examples.

    New Break Action Shotgun Covenant

It seems that some folks have been modifying the top opening lever on break action shotguns. This was discussed at the Summit and the TGs voted to limit this activity. The Range Officer Committee (ROC) has been working on the wording to apply to different models and potential modifications. The final wording will be added to the Shooters Handbook, page 9, as follows:

    SHOTGUN BREAK ACTION

    • Internal mechanisms to guarantee break action shotguns do not close accidentally may be added or modified.
    • The open angle for break action shotguns may be increased.

    ADD:

    • The top opening lever on break action shotguns may be bent (reprofiled) by no more than ˝” from the center of the tang to the outside edge of the lever.

Remember, “Any firearm modification not referenced in this Handbook is prohibited.”

    Rules Committee Update

Presented at the 2010 TG Summit by Snakebite

    1. RO II will no longer be allowed to teach RO I courses unless an RO III (Black Pin) is present.
    2. If you observe rule violations (off posse) that are not enforced by the T.O., Politely bring it to the attention of the Posse Marshal, Range Master or Match Director.
    3. The term R.O. will be changed to read T.O. in many places of the rule book to more accurately reflect what is intended.
    4. If a shooter is coached incorrectly by the T.O. and earns a procedural because of that coaching, the correct process would be to offer the shooter a reshoot (due to incorrect coaching). Simply removing the "P" is not an option because all shooters must shoot the stage the same way.
    5. The Match Director has the final authority at the match: "...and the discretionary authority in extenuating circumstances." The MD is god at a match.
    6. There will be some verbiage rewrites to the rules book in the near future. They will be published when we are finished.
    7. Boot soles in Classic Cowboy and B Western must not have lug soles. Lug soles are not the same as simple "grip enhancing soles", which are allowed.
    8. We are still working on a good definition of what constitutes an open action.
    9. Rear sights on revolvers must be of one color (acceptable color). No white outline allowed.
    10. Who may coach the shooter? The Timer Operator is the Official Coach. Spotters should assist the T.O. in coaching safety issues and knockdown targets.
    11. Are restarts a shooter's right or are they granted by the T.O.? T.O.s may authorize a restart or reshoot. Shooters my request them, but the final decision on the posse is the T.O. If the shooter does not agree, then they may follow the appeals process.
    12. SxS shotguns may not have any springs added to the extractors to assist in extracting the shells.
    13. The Laramie revolver may have the rear sights changed to fixed and then be used in a fixed sight category.
    14. Loading and unloading table procedures are not the same as stage instructions. The stage instructions tell us how many rounds to load and how to shoot the stage etc. Loading table procedures are generally safety related matters.
    15. The unlocking lever on a SXS shotgun may be bent no further than the outside of the tang. This is measured with the action closed.

SASS 2010 Territorial Governors' Summit Agenda

    1. Should we eliminate the 10-second minor safety penalty for overloading a RIFLE?
This would do away with the double penalty for overloading a rifle at the loading table and then leaving the extra live round(s) in the long gun. Penalties for leaving unfired rounds in the rifle would still apply, but if a shooter overloads the rifle, he/she could clear it within the current rules and not be charged a penalty. This rule change would not make the rifle any less safe. Note: this only applies to a rifle and NOT to a revolver or shotgun.
Should the following Minor Safety Penalty be deleted?
Loading more than the correct number of live rounds in a firearm.
    2. Should we change the rule regarding empties left on the carrier or in the chamber of a long gun?
An unfired round in the chamber would continue to carry a Stage Disqualification penalty and an unfired round anywhere else in the action or magazine a 10 second minor safety. This change would eliminate all penalties for EMPTY rounds in the chamber or action of long guns. (Note: this is unclear, but is presented as written. Wildroot)
Should the MSV penalty for leaving an EMPTY case/hull in a long gun be deleted?
    3. Should we create the new sanctioned shooting category Frontier Cartridge Gunfighter?
The category would follow the firearm and ammo guidelines of the current Frontier Cartridge category and follow the shooting style and holster requirements of the current Gunfighter Category. The main reason to add FCGF to the list of officially recognized categories is to bring the black powder categories up to par with the smokeless ones in regard to available shooting styles.
      • Smokeless
        • Open/Age-Based (two-handed)
        • Duelist/Senior Duelist/Classic (one-handed)
        • Gunfighter/B-Western (both hands);
      • Black Powder
        • Frontier Cartridge (two-handed)
        • Frontiersman/Frontier Cartridge Duelist (one-handed)
        • Frontier Cartridge Gunfighter (both hands)
    4. The Burgess Rifle is a SASS legal firearm. It was patented in 1882.
Should the rifle regulations for B-Western be changed to allow the earliest rifle to be from 1880 instead of present 1884?
Rifles: Any SASS–legal rifle of 1880 or later design or a replica thereof (e.g., Burgess, Lightning, 1892, 1894 Winchester or Marlin).

SASS 2010 Territorial Governors' Summit Discussion Items

Dexter O'Day, aka Peaceful, Passed Away

    Dear Cowboy Shooting Family,

It saddens me to announce that Dexter O’Day, aka Peaceful (SASS #256), passed away Thursday, October 14, 2010, after a brave fight with cancer. Peaceful was a long time SASS and Rendezvous shooter and was president of the High Sierra Drifters and West Point Rod & Gun Club. Although he has moved on to that big open range above, those of us who remain behind will have fond memories of being part of his life. Peaceful will be greatly missed.

Valorie "Rebecca Mae" Perkins Rice 1950 - 2010

Valorie lost her battle with cancer on the evening of August 23rd, 2010. She passed away peacefully in her Shingle Springs home, with her husband and son by her side.

She was born in Sacramento, CA on December 29, 1950. Valorie's surviving immediate family includes her husband of 33 years, Ernie (Oklahoma Red); her son Jameson; her three sisters, Daryl Perkins, Serena Biggs, and Tosca Stitt; and their families.

Throughout Valorie's life she had many diverse jobs and hobbies, but her true passion was the needle arts. She was very active in both the Embroiderers' Guild of America and the American Needlepoint Guild. She was long-time member of the Camellia Chapter in Sacramento and eventually became a certified needle arts judge. After moving to Shingle Springs, she became the driving force in forming the "Hanging By A Thread" Chapter in Placerville. She was their first Chapter President. She was also on the board responsible for the formation of ANG's first online chapter, "The Cyberpointers".

It was her wish that no regular service be delivered. A private remembrance is being held for the family.

The time has come for me to hang up my guns, and I want to say thank you to all my friends whom I have shot with since 1997; it has been a joy. I give special thanks to Four Eyes, who dragged me to my first meet. I have fought health problems since 2007, and now it’s catching up with me. I practiced long and hard in my persona as a working cowboy and became adept at missing and shooting slow. Anyway I would have used my pistols more for hammering fence staples than shooting bad guys. Please keep me on your e-mail lists so I can follow what’s going on.

    Thank you,

    Bill Snuffbucket

A Letter From California Deadeye Dick

    Dear Wildroot,

I am writing to ask you to publish two items:

    1. I am looking for a pump-action .22 rifle. If anyone has one in good condition, please contact me.

    2. I will not need it for awhile. As maybe most of you know, I have not been around lately. Some of you have seen me at gun shows helping with the NRA. I am not allowed to shoot much due to physical conditions. Most of you know that I broke my hand and was unable to shoot for a while. Then it was back surgery, which also prevented my shooting. I was allowed to go to a major match in New Mexico last year. I had a good time but was in a lot of pain. The cowboys in my posse carried me through the match, which I really enjoyed.  I made a lot of friends, and I am still in email contact with them.

For some odd reason, I was asked to come to Las Vegas for ten days to be a Range Officer for the USPSA National Handgun Championship. What a thrill to see all the shooters whom you see on television and to be their Range Officer for one stage.

During the time when I could not shoot, I received my NRA Pistol Instructor Certification, and at the end of this month, I will attend the Certified Rifle Instructor course.

With all the shooting I have done, I always look back at the people who helped me along the way. Allie Mo, Wildroot, who showed me how to take apart my new Ruger .22 Hunter Mark III and put it back together again. I have never shot it again in fear I could not get it apart and put back together. Wildroot was always there giving me support and yelling at me when I was doing something wrong, which made me a better shooter and instructor. There are many, many more of you guys and gals out there I also wish to thank.

It all comes to an end at the end of the month when I have to go back into the hospital (Mercy General) for my third back operation (3 spacers, 6 screws and 2 rods) and after that a knee replacement. I still want to get up with you guys again and shoot and maybe help a little more, but I will probably 80 or 90 years old before that happens. I am shooting (pun) to come out to some events to at least get some wonderful tri-tip dinners and see my friends.  And I will never forget Annie for all her sweet charm and wonderful ways she takes care of the cowboys and Peaceful, too.

Well, this started out to ask for a used .22 pump-action rifle, and I just got carried away.

I also want to thank the ones who took pictures of me while shooting, as I still look through them all the time and remember the fun we had and are going to have again.

Thanks to all you Cowboys I’ve met along the way,

    California Deadeye Dick

Congratulations Grizzly Peak Jake, New Murieta Posse President!

And thanks to Black Jack Traven!

Black Jack Traven has been a stalwart in Cowboy Action Shooting for many years. From involving his family in the game to leading one of the oldest clubs in the country to running the premier annual shoot in Northern California, he has made outstanding contributions. We are fortunate to have had his guidance and support over these many years.  Plus, he's a lot of fun to shoot with.

    Thanks Black Jack!!

Territorial Governors Voted Down Every Agenda Item
(Thanks to TG Nyack Jack for the update.)

    Territorial Governors' Summit Agenda Items

    1. Should we adopt the circle of safety concept for the drawing and holstering of handguns from all types of holsters? Holsters must still comply with the 30 degree maximum cant from vertical requirement and handgun muzzles must remain within the four foot circle of safety while drawing and holstering.

      FAILED:  15.1% FOR - 83.7% AGAINST (Required a 2/3rds majority)

    2. Should we eliminate the minor safety penalty for overloading a RIFLE? This will do away with the double jeopardy penalty for overloading a rifle. Penalties for leaving rounds in the rifle would still apply but if a shooter over loaded the rifle they could clear within our rules and not be charged a penalty. (The only problem would be a rifle reload stage - state all reloads must come from the body.) Note this only applies to a rifle and NOT to a revolver or shotgun.

      FAILED:  54.5% FOR - 44.6% AGAINST (Required a 2/3rds majority)

    3. Should we allow the use on adjustable-sighted revolvers in all categories except Classic Cowboy and Black Powder Categories? That would be to allow them in the Duelist and Gunfighter category. They are already legal in all age-based categories and B Western.

      FAILED:  50.6% FOR - 48.2% AGAINST (Required a 2/3rds majority)

    5. Should we create the new sanctioned shooting category “Frontier Cartridge Gunfighter.” The category would follow the equipment and ammo guidelines of the current “Frontier Cartridge” category and follow the shooting style requirements of the current “Gunfighter” Category.

      FAILED:  58.7% FOR - 40.1% AGAINST (Required a 2/3rds majority)

    New Website Features

Old News - At the request of Preacher Joe, I've added an Old News page. If there was something in the scrolling window you meant to read, but when you finally got around to it, it was gone, you can go to News...Old News through the menus. I'll keep old news items on the Old News page for at least 30 days.

If you want to look at old scores or old photos, you can get to them through the menus as before. Currently, old scores from January 2005 and old photos from February 2005 are available in the Archives.

Help - I've added a Help menu item to the menu bar. If you want to scan the help items, click on Help. If you want to view a particular topic, hover over Help, then click on the item you want in the submenu. Currently, there is a submenu item for each of the following:

    • How to Use the Scrolling Window
    • If You Missed Something
    • How to Submit Photos
    • How to Submit Ads
    • How to Submit Scores
    • How to Fix Firefox Error 400

Contacts - I've added a list of the local clubs' Territorial Governors and links to their email addresses.

I'll add more help as issues come up. If there's something you'd like to see added, let me know.

How Do You Like This New Window?

I'm using this window to replace the announcements page.

Move your mouse pointer over the up or down arrows to scroll the contents of the window. When you move your mouse pointer off of the arrow, it will stop the scrolling. When the scrolling is stopped, you can click on any links in the message.

My intent with this scrolling window is to present the table of contents for an organic Online Newsletter. Rather than take the time and space to present announcements in full in the scrolling window, I'll provide a link to a content page with all the information. This way you can come to the website and scroll the contents of the window to see if there's anything new you'd like to know more about without having to wait through old announcements to get to the new stuff. Basically, it's the same as the old, little scrolling window that Anita Margarita created with a couple of additions:

    • You can scroll the contents in either direction.
    • There are links in the headlines so you won't have to navigate the menus to get to an item.
    • There is more space for the headlines to be a little more descriptive.
    • There won't be a pause for each headline; you won't have to wait until one headline moves on before you can see the next one.
    • The headlines will scroll quickly, allowing you to scan them. You can stop the scrolling if you want to look at an item longer.

The old menu structure will still work, so you'll be able to access scores, photos, club info, annual matches, etc. the way you always have.

As you may have noticed, this is an evolving concept. I really want this website to serve you, so please give me your feedback -- positive or negative. Let me know what you think: wildroot@californiagunslingers.com.

    Thanks,
    Wildroot

Cowboy Town Suffered Severe Damage in This Week's Storm
    Report submitted by Tippecanoe

    The damage
The Tuesday, October 13th, wind gusts were clocked at a high of 53mph! At some point, the gusts coming from the south raised the hotel/bank porch roof which shoved all of the bay 3 sets over flat except where targets, shelves, cactus, etc. stopped the fall. The boardwalk is intact. The facades are sort of intact, certainly repairable. In fact the brickwork on the bank looks just like it rode through a large earthquake -- gives it character. The shade canopy between cantina and livery was tossed to the back of the bay, its poles were bent up badly, the covering was ripped in many places. The porch roofing is in as good condition as can be expected from its air travel over 60+ feet to land upside down deep in the bay.

    The good news
The jail, California Rangers' building, cantina and livery all withstood the storm with no damage. At the end of today's work party -- some party, more like a funeral -- thhe sets are cut apart, they are now lying flat (somewhat) and awaiting a new construction scheme to re-erect them in way to withstand the high winds that seem to visit us yearly or more often. One theory is that this desecration was from above because Jackalope didn't go to church last Sunday.

Cowboy Town is still in business
Tomorrow's Wild Bunch Match is ON. Sunday's Murieta Posse is ON. We will not be using bay 3. Stages have been set up in bay 4.

    CAUTION
If you wish to explore the damages up close, BE CAREFUL. There are lots of rusty nails still protruding from all the wood within bay 3 -- Cowboy Town will not be responsible for your visit to the tetanus shot dispenser should you encounter one of the nails.

    Thanks
Many thanks to today's cleanup crew: Sheriff Sutter Lawman, Mosebee, Rancid Rick, Sackett, Grizzly Peak Jake and Tippecanoe.

Repeal AB 962 (Handgun Ammunition Registration)!

Governor Schwarzenegger signed AB 962 (Handgun Ammunition Registration) into law, effective February 1, 2011. AB 962 will require that handgun ammunition purchasers provide an acceptable picture ID and be fingerprinted, and it will ban mail-order handgun ammunition purchases. AB 373 would repeal AB 972. The NRA has started a campaign to deliver a huge number of support letters to the Capitol during the Legislative Hearings on AB373 in January 2010. The NRA can't do this without your support.

Please download this Letter in Support of AB 373 and get as many people as possible to sign and return it. Deliver copies to your local shooting ranges, gun stores, friends, etc. Help fight legitimate handgun ammunition purchasers being treated like criminals.

And, please sign this online petition: http://www.calnra.com/cgi-bin/petition.cgi

If you want to know what it will be like if AB 972 goes into effect, read the full text of AB 962.

Goodbye from Anita Margarita & Jackalope

As many of you know, Jackalope and I have moved to Tennessee. Although we are excited about the move and our new life there, we are sad to leave all of our wonderful friends here. Who knew when we started cowboy action shooting six years ago that it would become such a huge part of our lives? And what an incredible place to have started - such a variety of venues, so many different approaches to playing the game, so many friendly, welcoming people. We will miss you all.

My email address at californiagunslingers.com has disappeared in the transition, so please begin sending any emails to me at: anita_margarita@ymail.com.

As we still have family in the area, we will be back to visit from time to time. So, until we see you again, good luck to everyone and stay in touch!

    Anita Margarita
